What Is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test. They deal with anything that moves, from components to machines to the human body.

Technically, mechanical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering from design to manufacturing to the marketplace for any object. Mechanical engineers analyze their work using the principles of motion, energy, and force—ensuring that designs function safely, efficiently, and reliably, all at a competitive cost.

Mechanical engineers make a difference. That's because mechanical engineering careers center on creating technologies to meet human needs. Virtually every product or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer to help humankind.

Develop your understanding of engineering design and the role of an engineer

Mechanical engineering combines creativity, knowledge and analytical tools to complete the difficult task of shaping an idea into reality. This transformation happens at a personal scale, affecting human lives on a level we can reach out and touch like robotic prostheses. It happens on a local scale, affecting people in community-level spaces like with agile interconnected microgrids. It also happens on bigger scales like with advanced power systems through engineering that operates nationwide or across the globe.

Who is the course for?

This course has been created for young people who want a taster of studying engineering at university, as well as anyone interested in how engineers think, approach problems, and follow projects from ideas to solutions.

Who will you learn with?

keya Uria
Senior Lecturer in Engineering in Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
With an undergraduate in Industrial & Mechanical Engineering, Prf Uria  worked both in industry and in academia in different countries (Spain, Slovakia and El Salvador) for a number of years. After these experiences, he decided to pursue further education related to aeronautics, his passion.
MSc in Aeronautical Engineering
Nick Burdon
Senior Lecturer in Aeronatical Engineering
Nick completed his degree at Loughborough University in 2000. This, and passing the Cranfield Test Flight Course developed his interest in aviation and flight simulation - leading to experience testing at Cranfield, Virginia Tech and NAS Patuxent River, before joining Wrexham Glyndŵr University.
